Gifted and precocious, Baby Makeba must choose between her desire for an education and truthfully testifying to a murder she witnessed.

The story follows 7-year-old Baby who has recently been relocated from rural Transkei to suburban Port Elizabeth. Her parents work for a wealthy white family and live in a modest cottage on the employer's property. The employer is also the town's mayor. Baby's parents are black while Baby is clearly mixed-race. Immediately we sense that something is amiss. Baby's realisation that she is different is juxtaposed against the mayor's wheeling's and dealings. Aiming to boost the city, and also to please his family, he makes a deal with the devil. This brings down terrible consequences that will shatter multiple lives.
