Sabine
My latest work.
Sabine is a sensitive and lonely young girl who feels ignored and struggles to fit in with her peers. With her long white hair, pale skin, and heterochromatic eyes—one blue and one brown—she becomes a target for teasing at school. Seeking solace from the cruel world, Sabine finds an unlikely friend in a caterpillar hidden in the bushes. She visits the caterpillar daily, finding comfort in its quiet companionship.
At home, Sabine's parents are too busy to notice her, but her grandmother shows her kindness and teaches her how to knit. The bond with her grandmother and the caterpillar become her only sources of joy. Tragedy strikes when the caterpillar forms a cocoon and her beloved grandmother passes away, leaving Sabine heartbroken and alone.
Grief-stricken and unnoticed by her family, Sabine retreats to her bedroom, where she knits a large cocoon for herself. When her family finally notices her absence, they search desperately for her. They find the cocoon hidden under a desk in her room and, upon tugging a loose thread, release hundreds of white butterflies, each with a blue spot on one wing and a brown spot on the other. One butterfly flies out of the window and into the night sky, symbolizing Sabine's transformation and the enduring presence of her gentle spirit.
